I was a bit skeptical at first, but using vinegar as a conditioner turned out to be a wonderful, yet weird decision. Vinegar conditioner is dirt cheap (less than 1€/l) and only takes a few minutes to make. It will truly revolutionize your hair routine. Concerned about the smell though? Know then that it will disappear as your hair dries. Just take extra care not to get any conditioner in your eyes (OK, I plead guilty) and you’ll wish you’d have known sooner about this DIY. Vinegar is a miracle-working ingredient!
It’s naturally high in acetic acid and has a pH level which is close to that of human hair. As a result, it balances the acidity level of your scalp and flattens your hair cuticles. Dandruff are reduced and your scalp doesn’t itch anymore. Vinegar also removes residue from hard-water build-up and helps you get shiny locks that stay clean longer.
For 500ml of homemade conditioner:
- 375ml of cold tap water
- 125ml of organic orange-infused white vinegar or organic apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains vitamins, essential acids, enzymes and pectin. It’s also full of minerals and trace elements. Hence apple cider vinager should be preferred unless you’re looking for the cheapest conditioner ever. Then use orange-scented white vinegar. To make some, follow these steps:
- Fill an airtight jar (500ml or larger) with organic orange peels;
- Pour enough organic white vinegar to cover the peels;
- Let it sit for at least 2 weeks;
- Strain the vinegar into a clean bottle for use.
The infused vinegar, without water, will keep for 6 months to a year if stored properly in a cool and dry area.
INSTRUCTIONS AND CONSERVATION
Simply mix the ingredients in the bottle of your choice (squeeze, spray or other). I personally use a glass bottle of 500ml that I find easy to manipulate. Given the significant portion of water, this conditioner needs to be made in small quantities. In case you use infused white vinegar, make sure that orange peels macerate long enough to ensure proper conservation. The conditioner will keep for about 2 months.
HOW TO USE THE CONDITIONER
Rinse 100ml throughout long wet hair after shampooing and massage into scalp. To extract the maximum conditioning benefits, just leave it in for a few minutes and towel dry the hair. I use this conditioner once every 3-4 days. I don’t wash my hair everyday.
