Time is gold. Cleaning the toilet bowl should be easy and fast. Cleansers should be effective and cheap. But how to make it happen? Let me introduce you to my homemade toilet bombs. Natural and easy to make, these packaging-free cleansers deodorize, disinfect and descale your toilet bowl.
To make 16 small toilet bombs:
- 100g technical grade sodium bicarbonate
- 50g citric acid
- 50g sodium percarbonate
- 90 drops of antibacterial essential oil (lemon, palmarosa, tea tree, etc.)
INSTRUCTIONS AND CONSERVATION
Put on a medical mask. Strong smells can result from the following mixture. You can quickly made one yourself with a large rubber band and a piece of fabric.
Put the essential oil into a tiny fine mist spray bottle and set aside.
Mix together the sodium bicarbonate, the citric acid and the sodium percarbonate into a bowl.
Gradually spray the mixture while stirring until the spray bottle is empty. The mixture should not (or slightly) fizz. If you add the liquid all at once, you’ll have a huge mess due to the reaction between all ingredients. If necessary, you can add a small amount of water in addition to the oil to help bind the powders together. Don’t use too much or the toilet bombs won’t fizz as they touch water.
Press the mixture into an ice cube tray [I use a silicone one from Ikea].
Let the bombs dry and harden for at least 4 hours, then remove from the ice cube tray and store in a sealable container. Protected from humidity, they can easily be kept for months. Reserve the spray bottle and the ice cube tray for that use only. Both will be impregnated with the essential oil.
HOW TO USE THE TOILET BOMBS
Drop a bomb into the toilet and let it fizz away. Stir water with the toilet brush and leave for 1 hour. Clean with the toilet brush and flush.
